India and Germany continue to deepen their longstanding strategic partnership. On August 5, 2025, Union External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with German Member of Parliament Mr. Jurgen Hardt in New Delhi to discuss growing bilateral cooperation and review current global developments.
Following the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar shared his appreciation in a post on X, highlighting the steady progress in India-Germany relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reaffirmed that Germany remains one of India’s most valued partners in Europe.
70+ Years of Strategic Ties
Diplomatic relations between India and Germany were established in 1951, and both countries celebrated 70 years of ties in March 2021. Over the decades, the partnership has expanded significantly across trade, investment, energy, and technology.
High-Level Engagements
The momentum of bilateral ties has been driven by frequent high-level engagements:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have met six times in the last two years, including at the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy (June 2024) and the G20 Summit in New Delhi (September 2023).
- In February 2023, Chancellor Scholz made a standalone State visit to India, a milestone in relations.
- The sixth Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) were held in Berlin in May 2022, co-chaired by PM Modi and Chancellor Scholz.
These meetings have resulted in agreements spanning clean energy, healthcare, agroecology, skill development, and mobility, with the most notable outcome being the Joint Declaration of Intent on the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP).
Expanding Global Cooperation
India and Germany’s collaboration increasingly focuses on sustainability, innovation, and future-ready industries, aligning with global climate and development goals. Their partnership continues to be an anchor for India-EU engagement.
In addition, Dr. Jaishankar also met Slovenia’s Ambassador to India, Ms. Mateja Vodeb Ghosh, for a farewell call, acknowledging her valuable role in strengthening India-Slovenia ties.
Looking Ahead
With shared values, strong economic ties, and mutual commitment to sustainable development, the India-Germany partnership is poised to grow further, shaping the future of global cooperation.
